Initially present in horse races, ante-post bets are basically anticipated bets; those that are made in the previous of the event. They can be weeks, months and, in certain cases, until years before. A good example for the last option is the market corresponding to the champion of the World Cup of soccer, generally available shortly after finishing the previous World Cup.
It is important to keep in mind that, in ante-post bets, the forecast. It also stipulates that the chosen selection will participate in the event in question. In this sense, it is worth knowing that some bookmakers give the play for loss before the non-participation of said selection. Continuing with the examples, assuming that we bet on Brazil as the next world champion and the South Americans do not finally play the World Cup, the bet can be canceled. With respect to this situation, there are operators who do return the money.
Bet types ante-post
The possibilities to make early bets are many and far from being limited to betting on the champion (‘Final Winner’). Some of the many are the following: top scorer (of a tournament or a team); if a team will descend, it will qualify to the final instances or it will finish between the 3 or 6 first of a contest; if it will end in the first or second half of the standings; with how many points the champion of a league will finish; if a team will be a leader at Christmas; the titles that a certain team will achieve during the season.
Pros and cons
The main advantage of this modality is that, when betting in advance, the fees are usually higher and, therefore, more profitable. This is noticeably noticeable when it comes to title favorites, whose odds will be logically more attractive before the tournament starts than when the team is leading, 7 points above their escort. In parallel, this system requires a very high level of patience since bets will take a long time to be defined after having been made.
The latter means that it is not one of the broadest and most popular markets among bettors, today much more dedicated to the dynamics of live betting, although that does not mean that its positive aspects should be omitted. Among these, the possibility of betting on the overall result, which a priori is less risky than doing it game by game, even taking a clear favorite as a reference. In addition, being a long-term bet, to some extent the influence of chance decreases.
However, ante-post bets also have cons. One of them lies in the organization and proper management of the bank, given that the money placed is immobilized for a time that in many cases is considerable. Also, to succeed in this type of betting requires a deep analysis of the circumstances surrounding both the event and the selection that is chosen. And it is not a mere study relative to the game itself, but it may well extend even to the economic and institutional. An alternative to counteract this element is to cover the initial bet depending on what happens with the chosen team or player.
Rules and advice
As we mentioned above, the first important rule has to do with the participation or not of the chosen selection: generally, when it does not participate, the houses give the bet as loser. In another order, if the chosen event suffers a change of venue or another type, the operator could cancel the bet, unless a specific regulation of that sport dictates otherwise.
The main recommendation to be successful in this modality is to carry out an exhaustive and meticulous investigation about the event and each of the factors that revolve around the selected variant. In this way, the chances of failure, which are always latent in a long-term bet, are likely to be reduced.
